The Icing on the Lake
If you’re thinking about taking a vacation, we urge you not to put that thought on ice. (Ha, get it?)
Now is the time to plan for your winter getaway to the Lake George region, where you will find several lakes covers with a nice layer of ice — not to mention a stunning circuit of bars and lounges carefully crafted from ice!
The Lake George Association declared Lake George officially “iced in” as of January 22, 2019. This is the first time since 2017, the third time in the last five years, and the sixth time in last 10 years. Though we had a good amount of ice on the lake last year, there were still some areas that never totally froze.
Lake George Winter Carnival, happening every weekend in February, brings a variety of events on the ice to Lake George.
For example, the famous Out House Races on the ice right off Shepard Park are a must see! They take place Saturday, February 2 at 12:30 p.m. only, so be sure to be there for the first weekend to enter your own outhouse or watch!
Also on the first weekend are ECS Sanctioned Snowmobile Ice Drag Races on the frozen lake off Million Dollar Beach.
Please check the Lake George Winter Carnival Facebook page for updates on the ice as the conditions may change.
Also on the ice
Every Sunday in February from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there are youth hockey scrimmages on the ice off Shepard Park. Skates are available with a signed waiver.
The second weekend there are sanctioned car races on the ice while the third weekend brings the NYS AMA Sanctioned Motorcycle and ATV Races.
Sanctioned car races take place the last weekend of Lake George Winter Carnival. There are also 4 X 4 races on the ice that weekend — February 23 & 24.
Those are just a few of the events happening on ice. There is snow much more! (Sorry…had to write it.)
Enjoy fireworks every Saturday at 6 p.m., the Dogs Got Talent contests at 2 p.m. Saturdays AND Sundays, pony rides, polar plunges, corn hole games, helicopter rides, the hot chocolate bar, FREE s’mores on the beach at the fire, cook offs (where you can sample the area’s best chili, BBQ, chowder and chicken wings for just $5! Check the full schedule to see what is available each weekend.)
Plus, Snocross is back this year!, Snocross is a motorcycle-style form if snowmobile racing where up to 15 sleds compete at the same time on a track featuring challenging conditions of rough moguls, high corner berms and jumps that send racers soaring through the air.
This takes place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 9 & 10 at the Warren County Fairgrounds.
