Salute Veterans

With Thanksgiving coming in a few weeks, we’re reminded to count our blessings.

We’re thankful to live in the United States where we enjoy so many freedoms. The freedom we benefit from wasn’t free. The price was paid by men and women who sacrificed. Some gave everything.

Take time this Veterans Day Weekend to celebrate the veterans in your community.

Also known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day is celebrated to mark the armistice between the Allies of WWI and Germany. This was the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of WWI. The ceremony took place at 11 a.m. — the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918 in France.

Our area offer several ways the whole family can pay their respects.

Field of Flags

One of the most visual displays in the area is the multi-day 5th annual Field of Flags on the west lawn of the Fort William Henry, located at 48 Canada St. in Lake George.

Approximately 6,625 flags will remain on the lawn from Monday, November 5, through Monday, November 12, 2018, to honor veterans and active duty military personnel.

Each year veterans are invited to submit their name, rank, time period and branch of service to be displayed with a flag. Family can also submit veterans’ names for the field of flags.

The name of each veteran or active duty military personnel isattached to a flag and placed in the field grouped by the period in which they served.

The public is invited to share the names of their service men and women to be added to the field – call 518-964-6647.
