Adirondack Civic Center Coalition agrees to purchase Adirondack Thunder

At the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce & CVB, we are proud to have the Adirondack Thunder Hockey Team and the Glens Falls Civic Center as members.

We’d like to congratulate the Adirondack Civic Center Coalition, Inc on their agreement to purchase the ECHL Adirondack Thunder from the Calgary Flames.

This means a lot to us because it ensures professional hockey will stay in Glens Falls within the Lake George region.

Attending hockey games has been a tradition for many in the region since 1979 when the Adirondack Red Wings, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, began the first of 20 seasons in the newly constructed Glens Falls Civic Center.

We were happy to hear the ECHL Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale in February, providing Coalition representatives with a seat on the ECHL Board.

We feel the Civic Center is an important venue in the region, offering entertainment for locals and visitors. Events range from concerts to sporting events and more.

Visitors to the Civic Center spend an estimated $8.2 million in the region annually according to 2016 data presented by Camoin Associates.

The improvements to the building over the past 700 days — such as the new video board display and audio system — have made a big difference in the quality of the experience at the GFCC.

The Adirondack Civic Center Coalition is launching a “Keep Hockey Here” fundraising campaign to raise funds to operate the team. They have already raised $200,000 of the $1 million campaign goal, including contributions from coalition members.

The coalition is a non-profit group of local business and community volunteer leaders who manage the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Any profits generated by the team will be used to support the team and the Civic Center, accoridng to a press release.
