From the first snowfall to the last, the Lake George Region is the place to visit for outdoor enthusiasts and laid back travelers alike. With so many activities and wonderful places to stay, Lake George is not simply a summer destination, it's a year round hub of fun and activity.
For the past 47 years Lake George has hosted an annual Winter Carnival. The Carnival offers a place to celebrate winter. Some events that are scheduled include outhouse racing, ice sculpture displays, snow painting, snowmobile jumps, and ice races with cars, trucks and ATV's. All of these activities are family friendly with safe watching distances available for the ice races and snowmobile jumps.
Snowmobilers will enjoy the 100 miles of groomed trails provided by Warren County with access in Lake George. State-owned Prospect Mountain and its Veterans Memorial Highway offers a 5 mile uphill challenge that rewards you with overlooks of fabulous mountain vistas as far as the eye can see---even to the peaks of Vermont on a clear day. Several of the year round hotels and motels have direct trail access for their overnight guests!
Many hotels offer Ski & Stay Packages that make traveling easy and affordable. The downhill ski enthusiast can choose to indulge their passion at the nearby resorts with 106 trails of fun to choose from. Don't fret though, if downhill skiing isn't your idea of a good time Lake George also offers many other outdoor opportunities. Cross-country skiers will not be disappointed! There is a myriad of trails in the region available to those who wish to use them, which includes a network of lighted trails in nearby Glens Falls.
What if skiing is not a desire of yours at all? The Lake George Region also offers its patrons the availability of snowshoe rentals to use on their own or in conjunction with a guided tour. While visiting you could choose to visit the Lake George Recreation Center for tubing and cross country skiing. Several area ski resorts also have terrific tubing runs—great for the whole family to enjoy! Provided you bring your own ice skates, there is ice skating on the frozen lakes. For the less adventurous, indoor skating is available at the new Lake George Forum skating facility.
If you're more of a laid back traveler, there are museums, concerts, outlet shopping, cozy bed and breakfasts, as well as top notch hotels that offer warm crackling fires, soft music, wine and a front row seat to all the winter wonderland that the Lake George Area has to offer. Some hotels boast complete spa services for the total winter-makeover.
