Lake George, NY in the Adirondacks

Getting Around Town

Lake George, NY  --  The carnival sound emanating from the pipes echoes off the surrounding Adirondack mountains. Suddenly the village awakens with the roar of the cannon from the walls of Fort William Henry. Like clockwork, another fun-filled day begins on the shores of Lake George. Stroll through the streets of Lake George Village and you will undoubtedly hear the sounds of the steam organ from the top deck of the Minne-Ha-Ha.

The town of Bolton, the hamlet of Diamond Point and other communities surrounding Lake George are both interesting and unique and have plenty of activities to enjoy. Quaint little shops and restaurants line the streets and a more relaxed atmosphere prevails. Many prefer this slower paced way of life and decide to enjoy Adirondack camping at one of the areas many campgrounds. If photography is your interest, there are plenty of beautiful scenic shots in the area, as well as a number of good live action possibilities.

Lake George Village, on the other hand, offers a village setting combined with a tremendous amount of interesting and fun things to do. Within two blocks you can rent a boat, ride a parasail, take a boat cruise, play miniature golf, hit the arcades, watch a war re-enactment, take a carriage ride, swim, jet ski, grab a great lunch, or have a tasty cocktail. This is just a sampling of the many things to do.

The nightlife is exciting. From waterside pubs to nightclubs with live entertainment, you will find plenty to do when the sun goes down.

Lake George played a major role in Adirondack history that you may wish to explore. Many great battles, even major turning points in the Nation's struggle for Independence, have occurred here in our own backyard. On a rainy day, you may find it convenient to visit places like Fort William Henry, or other historical monuments.

Dinner theaters and comedy clubs will also make for an entertaining evening. Visitors and locals alike gather at the outdoor amphitheater in Shepard Park to enjoy the weekly concert. Like the moonlight, sounds of Jazz, Blues and Reggae gently reflect off the lake’s surface. The kids love it too.

The village also has its own trolley so that visitors needn’t hassle with traffic or parking. Morning, noon and night you will find a fantastic array of fun things to do, so enjoy.

Lake George and the many surrounding lakes and rivers of the Adirondacks are famous as a wonderful setting for all kinds of boating. You can board a sightseeing ship for a scenic narrated tour of the waterway, lasting from one to four hours. Numerous boats and ships offer a variety of day and evening cruises, and some even have dining and entertainment options. If you decide you want to be the captain of your own ship, smaller motorboats can be rented for touring the lake on your own, or for picnicking and/or camping on one of the many lakes and islands in the region.

To learn some lake science and carry out a real water quality testing, you can go out on a floating classroom. If you were not aware, the waters of Lake George are known to be some of the cleanest in the nation.

In addition to boating and superior fishing, the waters in our area also offer the thrills of parasailing, water skiing, swimming and white water rafting. Lake George also boasts one of the highest concentrations of golf courses in the entire Northeast.

On shore, spend the day at one of the Adirondack region's many amusement and water parks, where we boast one of the largest fun parks in New York State - The Great Escape. They offer thrills and chills for kids of all ages and for even those of us who are still young at heart.

Gaining in popularity for general family fun in recent years are rodeos which offer championship events. If that isn’t enough, consider visiting one of the many horse stables and ride into the sunset with your family.

American history can be traced throughout the Adirondack region with Forts on the northern end and southern village end of Lake George. These are two attractions that offer history and fun with loud and colorful re-enactments of past military battles. There are numerous markers in the area erected where battles were fought and also museums displaying artifacts on the region’s history. For scuba enthusiasts, go to the bottom of Lake George where you can actually view sunken boats from years long past. Pamphlets on self-guided tours can be found at the Chamber of Commerce office.

On the lighter side, spend some time enjoying the fun of miniature golf, games in an arcade, roller skating, riding go-carts, taking a hot air balloon ride or just relaxing in a horse drawn carriage ride. If exploring caves and caverns is your pleasure, there are numerous options to be had within a short drive.

Lake George is also a well known shopping mecca.  People come from all over to enjoy our mile of factory outlets just a few minutes outside of Lake George Village.

Pure and simple, Lake George is a memorable place full of diverse attractions that many generations have enjoyed, and will continue to for years to come. Though some people may be misled to think otherwise, Lake George is the home of year-round attractions - fun for the whole family. The Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce can provide you with a complete listing of attractions, hours of operation and any cost incurred. We want to help you make this the vacation of a lifetime that you will fondly remember for many years to come.
