There are many towns within 30 minutes of the village that make for convenient day trips. A few of these towns are Saratoga and Glens Falls to the south, and Diamond Point, Bolton Landing, Warrensburg and many others in the Adriondacks. Each offers something for the curious explorer out for a short jaunt in the country.
Saratoga is home to the Saratoga race track, and every August thoroughbred racing comes alive. Enjoy an afternoon at the track and test your handicapping skills. Spending the day at the track and returning to Lake George gives visitors the best of both worlds. Saratoga is also famous for its drinking water and hot mineral baths — a definite must. Saratoga is off-season home to the New York City Ballet, and home to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
Try the thrill of whitewater rafting or tubing. There are several rafting companies that run the Sacandaga all summer long. The rafting companies of the upper Hudson also provide a thrilling ride in the Spring.
Glens Falls is the home of the Hyde Collection, a world class museum whose halls are adorned by works from artists such as Rembrandt, Raphael, El Greco and Winslow Homer; The Chapman Historical Museum, a wonderful way of enjoying countless hours of experiencing local history; and the World Awareness Children’s Museum.
There are always events or shows at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Experience baseball the way it was meant to be at East Field (A.K.A. The Lumber Yard), where the towering Lumberjacks provide evenings of family entertainment. If you’re into crafts, the town hosts several shows and exhibits each summer. Musical events also occur throughout the summer.
If you’re looking for the ultimate tour of the lake, Warren County has an airport. For a very reasonable fee, a charter pilot will take as many as three people up for an aerial tour of the lake. Rides last about an hour or more so bring your camera. You can see a lot in an hour.
Within an hour you can reach Albany to the south, and to the northwest, you can visit the popular Adirondack communities of Indian Lake or Blue Mountain Lake, both offering numerous activities including great fishing. Blue Mountain is home to the Adirondack Museum which is well worth the trip. There are also a number of good golf courses within a half hour drive of Lake George.
